P.S.H.E.
Through the teaching of P.S.H.E and citizenship we aim to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives and become informed, active and responsible citizens.
We use the Jigsaw PSHE Curriculum. A parent and carer guide to Jigsaw can be found at the bottom of this page.
Through our curriculum, we aim to foster an ethos of care for the individual and respect for others regardless of gender or race. Children are encouraged to recognise their worth as individuals and express their opinions confidently and respectfully. They are also taught skills so they can be successful in their relationships and can resolve their own problems. We use restorative approaches to help the children identify their own feelings and thoughts and those of others. The use of circle time is often used to explore issues which arise in school and in the wider world.
Additionally, we aim to give the children the knowledge and skills they need to live safe and healthy lives and we hold the ‘Healthy Schools Award’. By encouraging healthy habits, we hope to provide the building blocks for a healthy life.
From September 2020, relationships and health education (taught as part of PSHE) has become statutory in schools. The Jigsaw curriculum covers all aspects of this. We conclude from the DFE Guidance that sex education refers to Human Reproduction. In order to teach this in a scientific context, and knowing that National Curriculum Science requires children to know how mammals reproduce, we have opted to teach this within our Science curriculum, not within PSHE or Relationships, Health and Sex Education as we believe this is most appropriate for our children. The teaching will focus on what is needed for reproduction but not how this occurs. We have decided to also teach the following additional aspects of sex education: how a human reproduces and how this leads to conception. As this is taught in PSHE, parents can choose to withdraw their children from this learning. Learning in this area will be sent home to parents prior to the lessons.
We give children the opportunity to discuss their responsibilities as citizens and encourage them to understand how the behaviour of people affects local, national and global issues. We aim to promote a caring attitude to others and take part in many events to support charities and people in our local environment. The children are expected to take an active role as citizens, including working on or with the School Council and Eco-council where decisions are made in consultation with all pupils.
During the year we participate in theme weeks and initiatives such as the ‘Golden Boot Walk to School’ initiative, Anti-Bullying Week and Safer Internet Day. Whenever new opportunities arise which support learning in P.S.H.E, we aim to participate.
We are fortunate to be supported by ‘Cobweb’, our parent/teacher association, who help to fund opportunities to further enrich the curriculum such as ‘Gripping Yarns’ theatre group and The Life Education Bus.
